Performing artists enjoy in many countries around the world an intellectual property right in their performance in analogous way as the authors enjoy an intellectual property right in their works. Thus for instance if a recording containing the performing artists' performance is broadcast or in an other way communicated to the public, remuneration is due for the benefit of the participating performers. Such remuneration rights are managed collectively by performers' rights managing organisations. These have the task to identify the performing artists whose recorded performances have been used in order to be able to distribute the remuneration collected by them for the entitled performers in their own countries and abroad..

For many years the societies have lacked an identification number linked to the performing artist to enable them to deal efficiently with performer data. Eighteen performers' rights managing organisations therefore have established in 1997 the International Performers Database Association (IPDA) with the goal of setting up an International Performers Database (IPD) in order to solve the problem of the identification of the performers taking part in the played recordings. The IPD assigns a unique ID number to each performing artist. By May 2011, 37 performers' rights organisations adhere to the IPDA and more than 501,000 performing artists are registered in the IPD. In the following pages we are most happy to show you precisely how the IPDA deals the performer data.
